Please tell us
about yourself and your writing.
I’m a stay-at-home mom by
trade, with two teenage boys. My husband and I have been married for sixteen
years now, and we currently have two very spoiled dogs. I live in the Seattle
area of Washington state.
I write contemporary romance
a bit more on the sweet and heartwarming side. I started writing when my boys
were little. I’ve honestly lost track of time, but I think it’s been about
twelve years now? It was a dream I had one morning that demanded to be written
down. I became addicted to the process. My first book was published in 2010.
What inspired
your current book?
A Second Chance at Forever
was inspired by something I’d read online. It was a two or three sentence
passage someone had posted on a message board. The main character was a woman
who worked as a stripper and hated the job. My mind took this and ran. Being a
romance writer, my first immediate thought, “What kind of heroine would work in
a strip joint?” My heroine, Angela, stepped out and introduced herself to me. Angela
told me she was a smart girl, works as IT specialist for a small company by
day. She works as a stripper on the weekends to make extra money. Okay, now I’m
intrigued.
Of course, I then needed a
hero to counter her. Alex took a bit of coaxing. His name actually popped out
at me in the pages of another book. I was re-reading an old favorite, Diana
Galbandon’s Voyager. The hero in her book at the beginning uses an alias. He
goes by the first name of Alex. At that point, my hero, Alex, sat down on the
arm of my recliner and smiled at me.
Recently
divorced and working two jobs, Angela Lewis has no room in her life for love.
Yet when her childhood crush finds her at the nightclub where she works as the
sexy stripper, Candy Cane, and expresses his interest, Angela can’t resist. She
only wants one night to live the fantasy her alter ego provides.
Alex McKinley is still trying to pick up the pieces of his
shattered life, and one night with Candy is exactly what he needs. He gets more
than he bargained for, however, when he discovers she's the little sister of
his best friend. Suddenly little Angie’s all grown up and driving him
crazy.
The more time he spends with Angela, the more Alex
finds himself falling for the woman she’s become. She makes him want to live
again. But can he convince her to take a chance on him?

Joanne, thanks for being a guest on my blog. Your book sounds amazing. Sexy strippers named Candy Cane...woot! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for having me! The name Candy Cane...haha. I wanted something completely obvious. lol Though, hopefully, Angela doesn't fit the stereotype. ;)
DeleteI've always thought that my stripper name would be "Stormy Weathers"...because everyone secretly has their stripper name picked out. Right? ;-)
DeleteI have this book on my iPad and I can't wait to read it! I think the concept is so unique. People are so quick to judge others without knowing the back story or who that person really is. Having a stripper for your heroine is simply genious! And the man who loves her, well, he really is a hero. Not only is the concept dynamite but I absolutely love the cover of A Second Chance At Forever.
ReplyDeleteDo your characters often come to you this way? Reading a passage in a paper or magazine?
Hi Niecey! You know, I haven't read any other books out there with a stripper for the heroine, but a recent review mentioned that these two didn't fit what's normally done, so now I'm intrigued. If anybody's read any, I'd love to know the titles!
DeleteDo my characters often come to me this way--yeah, it kind of does. I have a very vivid imagination. My mind takes stuff like this and just wanders with it. Though this is the first time I can remember that I've actually been inspired enough that I had to sit down and write the book. Usually it's an idea I jot down and file away. This one kind of took a hold of me and demanded to be written. lol
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, Joanne. (hmmm owe you a review) *wince*
ReplyDeleteI remember reading the blurb and thinking, wow! A stripper heroine? How is Joanne going to pull this off? Very brave, my friend and you pulled it off brilliantly. I started reading with a raised eyebrow and ended up totally pulling for Angela.
Oh no worries about the review. I'm just glad you enjoyed it.
DeleteThis one's getting me mixed reviews/ratings on Goodreads and I have to admit, I was nervous about how it would be perceived. That's exactly what I thought when the idea came to me--a stripper for a heroine? I'd never heard of it before. *Could* I pull it off? But it was one those books I *had* to write. I ended up falling in love with Alex.
Thanks for stopping by, Mac!
Sounds like a great book Joanne! Neat concept and who says a heroine can't be anything she wants? We all do what we have to do to survive! Finding love along the way is just a happy Perk!
ReplyDeleteLisa, I like the way you put that. :) Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteSounds like a wonderful read, Joanne! It's fascinating to explore the reasons behind the choices. There's a HEA out there for everyone.
ReplyDeleteI like to believe so. :) Thanks for stopping by, Karyn!
DeleteWhen our characters come to us, part of our job is over. We don't have to design them; all we have to do is take the time to get to know who and why they are. I have an odd concept that characters are floating around everywhere until they find the right author to tell their story. I'm so glad Angela and Alex found you. Good luck with all your writing. Now I'm back to working on "that first kiss." How many times can you describe a kiss and make it different? Joanne, I need your help. You're so good at this...
ReplyDeletehahaha. What I do is close my eyes and feel it. Put myself in his or her shoes and force myself to stop thinking. And then I tweak. And tweak again. And you know how that goes.
DeleteI agree about the characters. I don't create them. They find me. I'm just the secretary. I take dictation.
Thanks for stopping by, Vonnie!
This is a great concept for a romance. A heroine in an unlikely job and a hero trying to pick up the pieces. You've hooked me! Thanks for the great interview!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nona!
DeleteI loved those days when my girls were small and I could write for hours after they went to bed. I wrote everything by long hand back then. Lovely interview, ladies.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't want to do it over, but I do miss the days when my boys were small. Thanks for stopping by, Calisa!
DeleteThanks again for having me, Melissa!
Pleasure was all mine, Joanne! :)
