Leslie McKelvey's ACCIDENTAL AFFAIR || Character Interview

Interview with Jack Vaughn of ACCIDENTAL AFFAIR

“Okay, Jack, let’s do this.”

“Do what?”

“The interview, remember?”

Silver eyes narrow and dark brows draw down.  “I thought you were kidding.  I don’t have time for an interview.  I have bad guys to catch.”

Rolling my eyes.  “You’re not really an FBI agent.  You’re a character in my book, Accidental Affair.”

“Really?”  He gives me that look, the one we women know well.  “Felt pretty real when I got shot . . . TWICE.”

“You’re still holding that against me?  Wow.  Talk about a grudge.”  I give him a pointed look.  “I got you and Laine together in the end.  That should get me some forgiveness.”

Jack sighs heavily.  “Fine.  But let’s keep it short and sweet.”

“Like a dwarf with a cavity,” I reply with a grin.  “So, tell me about your favorite scene in Accidental Affair.”

The bored look is back.  “You’re kidding right?  There are SO many to choose from.”  One dark brow rises and his eyes narrow slightly.  “Let’s see, there’s the one where I get shot and tumble headlong down an embankment.  No.  How about the one where I make a complete idiot out of myself when Laine tries to kiss me?  Nope, don’t like that one either.”  He rubs his chin.  “Then there’s the scene where I get shot AGAIN, or where Laine and I are separated because she goes into Witness Protection, or where Laine has to kill someone to save me.”  He crosses his arms over his chest.  “You created me.  Out of those myriad choices, what scene do YOU think I like best?”

SUCH a no-brainer.  “The love scene.”

A wicked gleam enters his eyes and he gives me a grin.  “Good guess.”

“Any particular reason why?”  I already know the answer, but I’m still dying to hear it from him.

“Because I finally get the girl,” he replies with a wiggle of his eyebrows, “and I don’t make a complete idiot of myself.”

Is it getting warm in here, or is it just him?  “Well,” I begin, fanning myself, “you’re right about that.”

He gives me a slow, lazy smile that needs a warning label.  “You wrote the scene.”

I clear my throat.  “Okay, next question.”

“Hey, I wasn’t finished with the last question.”

It IS warm in here, and it IS him.  “Anyhoo, one of the reviewers from my last tour said you were her favorite bad boy.  How do you feel about that?”

He shrugs and sits down in an armchair facing mine (yes, we’re sitting in armchairs).  “I don’t know.  I’ve never really thought of myself as a ‘bad boy’.  I had to play one while undercover, but I’ve always thought of myself as more like Superman.”

Now my eyebrows shoot skyward.  “Superman?  How so?”

The sexy grin is back.  “Peel off the outside layer and you have a superhero.”

“A hot, NAKED superhero,” I mutter.

“What was that?”

“Nothing,” I lie.  “Next question.”

“No, I want to know what you said.”

I glare at him.  “I said you were hot.  Can we move on now?”

Jack steeples his fingers and taps them against his chin.  “If you want.”

“I do.”

His smile says he enjoys my embarrassment.  “Fine.  You’re the author, after all.”

“Don’t forget it.  I can always bring you back and kill you off.”

He chuckles softly.  “Your readers wouldn’t like that.  You tried that with the original ending of Accidental Affair, remember?  If I recall correctly, I die after killing Ripley, and then Laine and Bear fall in love.”

“Wait, how did you . . . ?”  I stare at him.  “You couldn’t know that.”

“Bear told me.”

I feel the frown.  “Of course he did.”

“Your writing coach said it wouldn’t fly.”  He purses his lips and pretends to brush a speck of lint from his button-up shirt.  “Besides, Laine and Bear would never forgive you.”

“They’re not the boss of me.  I created them, too, after all.”

He laughs, and for the thousandth time I envy Laine.  “Now, now,” he says, “don’t get all twisted up.  What’s the next question?”

I glare at him for another second.  “Do you think your relationship with Laine will last?”

His expression sobers.  “I do.”

“Why?”

“We’ve been through so much to be together.”  He gives me a pointed look.  “You put your characters through hell before you let them fall in love.  Why would you do that only to rip us apart in the end?”

“It makes for good reading.”

“Readers like a happily-ever-after,” he counters.  “After all, you brought Laine and me back in your next two books.  Are you going to write another just to off us all?”

“I might.”

His broad shoulders lift in an elegant shrug.  It’s hard not to sigh with feminine appreciation.

“You love us too much,” he says.  “You care about your characters and want the HEA for them as much as the readers do.  Isn’t that right?”

“Hey, this was supposed to be an interview of YOU, not ME.”

He gives me a wink.  “Sorry.  I’m more accustomed to asking questions than answering them.”

A knock on the door draws our attention, and about a second later Bear sticks his enormous, blonde head into the room.  My insides quiver as his bright blue gaze swivels between Jack and I.

“Hey, Leslie, Jack.  I thought the interview was today.  How’s it going?”

Jack grins.  “I think it’s going swimmingly.”

I frown.  “He’s turned the tables and is interviewing me.”

Bear laughs and pushes the door open, his 6’8” frame actually filling the opening.  “Nice one, Jack.  Good to know you’ve still got it.”

“I learned from the best,” Jack says.

“If you two start ganging up on me this interview is OVER.”

Bear gives me that look.  “You’re almost at your max word count, Les.  It IS over.  Besides,” he pauses and glances at Jack, grinning, “we have bad guys to catch.”

I really should kill them off, but Jack’s right.  I do love them!

ACCIDENTAL AFFAIR

By
Leslie McKelvey

BLURB:
Jack Vaughn is sure his life is over as he tumbles down the wooded hillside onto the deserted two-lane stretch of asphalt. Years of work ended with a single gunshot. Yet, it’s not over.

A good Samaritan stops to help him, despite the danger he poses to her.

Laine Wheeler knows better than to stop for strangers on the rural Montana highway near her home, but her conscience won’t allow her to leave an injured man behind.

What she doesn’t know is the man is an undercover ATF agent tasked with infiltrating a domestic terrorist group. His cover has been blown and helping him will put her life in danger.

Though there is an instant attraction, Jack knows that beginning a romantic relationship with Laine would be both unfair and unwise. Yet the farther they run, the harder it gets to ignore the feelings that are surging between them.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:
Leslie McKelvey has been writing since she learned to write, and her mother still stores boxes of handwritten stories in the attic.  Leslie read her first romance at 12 and was hooked.  When her high school Creative Writing teacher told her she needed to be a novelist, she decided to give it a try.  Finally, at the ripe old age of...forty-something...her debut novel, Accidental Affair, made it into print through Black Velvet Seductions Publishing.  The publisher has also contracted two more manuscripts, which will follow Accidental Affair shortly.

Leslie is a war-veteran who served with the U.S. Navy during the Gulf War, and she was among the first groups of women to work the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.  During her five years tour she was stationed at NAS Miramar and was an F-14 Tomcat mechanic and plane captain.  While in San Diego she spent time on the carriers USS Independence, USS Ranger, USS Lincoln, and the USS Nimitz.  The final two years of her enlistment were spent on Guam and her squadron frequently deployed to Japan and the Middle East.

She learned everything she knows about firearms and tactics from her police officer husband, who is a weapons expert, range master, and firearms instructor for one of the most highly-respected law-enforcement agencies in the world (and one he wishes her NOT to disclose).  He is her biggest supporter and her unpaid consultant on everything law-enforcement and weapons related.  She has three boys who keep her very busy and contribute daily to her growing number of gray hairs.  Her oldest son is a United States Marine and the younger two have vowed to follow in their brother’s footsteps (OOH RAH!).  She spends her off-time (kidding...WHAT off-time?) reading, taking pictures, and sending lead down range (that's shooting, for those who are unfamiliar).  One of her favorite scents is the smell of gunpowder in the morning....
