The Write Pet: Renee Charles || ONLY LOVE SURVIVES

Is She a Dog?  by Renee Charles

I don’t know about yours, but our dog doesn’t know she’s a dog. Well technically she isn’t. She is a Wolf / German Shepard Hybrid, and way too smart for her own good. Or ours.

Our Snap-On tool vendor called us and told my husband his dog had been caught by a wolf. Nine puppies, come get one. We waited until they were old enough and took our two boys. As the other dogs ran and played with each other, this pup came and sat on my husband’s foot. We encouraged the kids to play with all the puppies to see how they interacted. When they came near us, this dog was very happy to play with them. When the boys ran off again, she stayed by or on my husband’s foot. As the afternoon went on we figured our fates were sealed. She had chosen us. The fact that she got car sick on the way home should have been a clue as to what we were in for.

Because she is a hybrid, I felt compelled to do research into wolf/pack behavior to see how different it would be from having a regular dog. Was it different?

She is 10 years old now and since she hit about 6 months, it has been like constantly having a three year old around that never grew up. She loves to play in the snow, lets us know when she is pissed (usually by burying her food dish in our bed), and picks on the other dog for fun. (He struggles with the new hardwood floors so she likes to bump into him and knock him over.)

She hates to lie on the ground without sufficient pillows, has a sensitive stomach and will bypass steak to get her paws on pizza. (She will go to great lengths to steal pizza. Then spend the night throwing up because, like I said, she has a very sensitive stomach.) When we camp, if she gets dirt on her belly and we don’t wash it off, she breaks out in a rash. But it’s not usually a problem, because she doesn’t like to lay on the ground.  She prefers to lay in a camping chair and will steal the chair of whomever happens to stand up.   There are 4 of us and we always bring 5 chairs, then have to explain to people why it’s not a spare.

So glad I did all the research into what having a wolf in the family would entail, none of which seems to apply to her. The running joke in our house is that if she’d been born in the wild, she would not have made it. However, that research did come in handy when I wrote my first werewolf novella Changes In Autumn.

Does she help with my writing?  Well, she likes to lay on the couch next to me with her head on my thigh while I weave my tales. When she is done waiting her turn for my attention, she puts her paw in the middle of my keyboard, so if you call that helping… By the way any typos you see here are her doing not mine.

I would love to hear what your animals do that makes them seem more human than pet. Leave it here in the comments…

Excerpt:

Sam eased the soap from her hand. She turned her head to look up at him over her shoulder, eyebrows knit together in question. He lifted her wet locks in one hand, and skimmed the bar of soap over them with the other. Megan closed her eyes, tipped her head back, and gave him full access to her entire head. He rubbed his hands together and watched the bubbles build while his fingers worked the golden brown strands into a lather. It felt damn good to touch a warm human being. Flesh and blood, pulsating with life.
He’d been alone too long. Months. Hard to say exactly, since he didn't know what day it was. Bet she knew. She probably knew the exact date it happened, today’s date, all of it. He could ask, but he wasn’t sure he wanted to. It was enough just to touch her.
Sam reached over and set the soap on his discarded shirt then focused on the slippery tresses in his hands. He slid his hands through them, over and over, until all the knots came undone between his fingers. When he raised his hands to the top of her head and massaged above her ears, a moan of pleasure escaped her, and it echoed inside him. Fire rushed to his lower abdomen. Despite the cool water flowing around them, his body responded in a way it had no right. He let his fingers slide to the ends of the strands again. Her shoulder glistened, and when he scooped up a handful of water to rinse away the soap, he let his palms trail down  to her shoulders just to see if they were as soft as they promised to be. She relaxed under his ministrations, so he didn't stop. He allowed his fingers to trace a path down her arm to her hand below the surface of the water where he laced his digits with hers.

Author Bio:
Author, Renee Charles believes all love is legendary. Being the only female in a house full of giants (husband and two teenage boys) she tends to lean toward the macabre, but inevitably the softer side shines through.

Whether life leads her to a snow covered mountain top, sun dappled forest, or the bottom of a ravine (yes, ditches happen) she always has a pen and note pad ready so wherever the next adventure takes her, she can take notes.

Her own romance began in an insane asylum. Luckily, both she and her husband only worked there. But it makes sense her romance novels have strange beginnings that lead to passionate endings. Romance with a twist.

In the face of zombies, werewolves, and big foot she always seems to find a happily ever after to leave you with a sigh at the end.

Want to Quit Your Day Job? Think about this... by Renee Charles || ONLY LOVE SURVIVES

Things to consider before you quit your day Job… Besides Money

What would you do if presented with the opportunity to Quit your day job? Is there anything that might make you reconsider?

About a year and a half ago I had an amazing opportunity presented to me. A job offer that would take me away from the humdrum life of being an accountants assistant to writing full time for a company. The position included writing web content, two blogs, press releases and social media. Needless to say I gave my notice at the job I’d had for seven plus years (during which I managed to write my first two books as well as find a publisher) and everyone wished me luck in following my dreams.

The thing I had not considered turned out to be how researching and writing for stringent deadlines would tap the creative juice leaving a shortage for my own personal use. Six months into the job, my better half asked when was the last time I’d written any of my own stuff? My answer shook me to the core. I’d not written a darn thing for myself since I took the position.  Eight months into the job, the company decided to leave the state and I stayed behind.  In the shuffle of looking for a new job, I found myself with a scattered schedule and time for everything but writing. Another six months whizzed by and I had little down on paper to show for it.

As luck would have it, my old job had gone through two replacements and was looking again. When I got the call I snatched up the opportunity to go back to work. I have since began writing again.

SO here’s what I figured out about me and my writing habits…
  • I need the mundane accounting life during the day to allow my creative side to build up and run amuck at night.

  • I require the structure of a day job sucking up all my time to seek out and steal those precious hours required for writing the great romance novels brewing inside me, because apparently left to my own devices I am a huge procrastinator. Who knew?
Now my point here is NOT to tell you what WILL happen if you get the chance to quit your day job. Nope. I am sharing my story to show you that money is not the only consideration, and before you leap make sure you are facing the right direction. Happy writing!

Excerpt:

A storm that spelled danger flashed across Sam’s face. He advanced on Megan so fast, she backed up against the side of the Suburban. Planting a hand firmly on each side of her, he pinned her with his arms as well as his gaze.

“What I want? Are you so hard headed you can’t tell what I want?” He covered her mouth with his lips and crushed her clever comeback with an assault on her senses.

Megan pushed him, but he didn’t budge. Instead, he continued to kiss her until her heart raced and cheeks flushed with need. All resistance melted and she succumbed to the warmth of his embrace. Her arms wound around his neck of their own accord pulling him closer while her tongue sought his in a passionate dance, completely ignoring what her heart wanted.

When he finally broke away leaving Megan breathless and wanting so much more, Sam put his forehead to hers and watched her mouth like a drunk watches amber liquid poured into a glass. “You,” he rasped. “I’ve wanted you since I found you hanging from that damn roof, and all our little encounter in the river did was add fuel to the fire.”

Guest Blogger: How To ‘Write What You Know’ for Urban FANTASY by Renee Charles

As authors, we are told to be successful we must write what we know. But how does that work for an author of Paranormal Romance or Urban Fantasy? If authors only wrote what they knew, we would have very few genres out there to read.

How many of us have been to Narnia or The Push for that matter? Don’t get me wrong. There is something to be said about cutting your teeth on the familiar. (Just ask my dog and my slippers.) But what if we writers went another route? Another philosophy? What if we went in with the intention to get to know what we are writing about? After all, at some point it becomes necessary to branch out past our experiences to create worlds beyond our own existence. Otherwise how would Oz, Wonderland, or Frankenstein have been created?

So how do you write the unfamiliar with authority? How do you bring authenticity to what you make up?

In a word, Adventure.

We’ve all heard the story of the fateful night Mary Shelley and several others created their monsters in a macabre challenge born of wine, boredom and conversation; conversations about the work of Erasmus Darwin, which reportedly led to her dream and then later, her novel. But, did you know Mary Shelly crept around graveyards at night? Yep, typical teen, snuck out at night to meet her future husband at her mother’s gravesite once he and her father had a falling out over a business matter. (Well maybe not so typical. I didn’t meet my boyfriends in a graveyard.)

Adventures supply real experiences, which we can draw from when describing the worlds we make up.

For example while writing my new romance novel, Only Love Survives, I shot an automatic rifle called an Hp45. Now, I did not shoot a Zombie or a person in any way shape or form, of course. (I know, quit saying ‘duh’, and follow me a minute.) But how would I know how to describe the weight and recoil of the weapon if I had not experienced it? Using a weapon allowed me to incorporate all five senses into writing the scenes. To me that is not writing what I know, but getting to know what I am writing about. Oh and btw, after seeing what it did to a watermelon, it was easy to envision what such a weapon would do to a Zombie.

How can you write about the ocean if you have never tasted the salt air?

Each author has a different process. I can only share mine. But your writing will be enriched if you seek out ways to explore the world you’re writing about, even the made up ones. If you are writing about a faraway desert that rivals the Sahara, by all means don’t be afraid to write it just because you have not been there. But do take a trip to a beach on a sunny day, otherwise you might miss what it’s like to burn your feet on hot sand.

Not all genres have the luxury of writing what you know, but don’t let it stop you. Seek new experiences to draw from, and your writing will remain fresh as well as realistic.
