The State of the Snarkology, Year End Edition

My friend, Sheryl R. Hayes, commented yesterday that the Snarkology was going like gang busters during the 25 Days of Christmas Stories event but then she hasn't seen much from me since then. I was like: "Yeah. I'm tired. Christmas always wears me out." (Technically, it's more correct to say that I wear myself out.)

However, her observation prompted me to post something personal. And--by way of explanation--to mention that the three Snark children are out of school for the next week, so my online activities are bound to be restricted. I have plans to get back to active blogging in January but for the next seven days, I plan to coast.

I've seen a couple mentions of New Year Resolutions. I'm not big on resolutions, especially since I never keep them. Every year, I do write down some writing goals for the coming year. But before I do that for 2014, I thought I should look up my goals for 2013 and see how I did.

I've actually forgotten what they are, but I know I posted them over on Accentuate Writer's forum. So bear with me for a moment while I go locate that post...

<<Drum roll>>

And, I either can't find them because: A) they're not in my journal, or B) they never existed in the first place. Perhaps my 2013 writing goals were merely a product of my fertile imagination.

Eh. Let's look at what I did accomplish in 2013 as opposed to what I forgot to write down.

  • In March, I published the first part of my Loki's Wolves series, THE CHILD THIEF.

  • In May, I published the ebook edition of HUNGER MOON. A few

months later, I came out with the paperback version via Createspace. (#2 in the Loki's Wolves series.)

  • In summer, I signed a contract with The Wild Rose Press for a 80k erotic paranormal novel that is currently in revision. THE MATING GAME should release in the first half of 2014.

  • If I haul some serious writing butt over the next couple days, then I can claim to have completed the first full draft for BATTLE CRY, which will be #3 in the Loki's Wolves series. If/when I do so, then I'm going to celebrate by dong a cover reveal.

  • Worth mentioning: I did spend several months working on the manuscript for HELL ON HIGH HEELS, a contemporary romance novel, which has undergone various revisions and incarnations over the last couple years. Originally conceived as a sequel to LEARNING TO FLY, I find myself dissatisfied with how that choice restricts my options. In all likelihood, I'll return to HOHH in 2014 and the novel will once again undergo extensive revisions.

Anyway, that's it for now. I'll be updating more soon but I'm due to go shower so that I can fetch the Middle Child from his friend's house and then take Miss Bear to the park so she can ride her new Minnie Mouse bike.

Look! Look! Isn't it cute?

Miss Bear has wheels!

  1. The only New Year's Resolution I make is not to make them.

    1. I'm pretty much right there with you, R.E. I do usually write up a little list of goals at the start of the year, usually no more than three or four items. I find it helps me focus my creative efforts.

  2. Well, I'm impressed. I only managed one book this year. My goals included a Christmas novella - maybe next year. In addition to self-publishing for the first time, I retired from the day job, moved across the country, lost my father, supported my daughter through a major life change, and embarked on a mammoth remodeling project. My personal projects simply couldn't come first. Again, maybe next year. Happy New Year, Melissa!

    1. Alison,
I think you did pretty darn well considering you did your own cover design on Unwritten Rules. (I hire Farah Evers to do that for me. :D) I do understand where you're coming from. Both my grandmas passed away this year. It's been emotionally rough.

  3. I find myself wondering where the time went...there are all of the things that I keep intending to do and it seems that every time I turn around, I find more things that I haven't finished yet. I decided not to make any resolutions at the beginning of the year because it frustrates me when I realize that I haven't accomplished them so I think I am going to continue with that technique, lol. Thanks for the giveaway and congrats on your upcoming release!

  6. Hi Melissa. You've accomplished a lot in 2013 and have a lot to be proud of. Love the Minnie Mouse bike, BTW. Best of luck for a great 2014!

    1. Thanks, Marie! :-)

Miss Bear is totally enamored with that bike. Yesterday, she fell off for the first time and got a bump despite her helmet so there were many boo-hoos. But all in all, it's her favorite present.

  7. Melissa, congrats on all you've accomplished in 2013. It's always fun to look back and see what we've done. You should be proud!

And, even if you don't consider them official resolutions/goals, you did sneak some into your update above! Good luck with your revisions on "Hell on High Heels". I just love the title!

    Happy New Year!

Yes, that's it exactly! A self-back pat to assure yourself that you actually accomplished something. I'm thinking about what I want my 2014 goals to be. Maybe I'll post those next Sunday.

And thank you! I rather like that title myself. *G*

  8. I don't do resolutions either, but I plan to post a goal for 2014 this week and see how close I get by years' end. :) Good luck with all your endeavors, Melissa. :)
