How to Redeem a Bad Boy? by Christine Wenrick || SOMEONE ELSE'S SKYE

First off I would like to thank Melissa and The Snarkology for letting me stop by today and talk to you about how to redeem those bad boy heroes.

You're welcome, Christine! It's awesome to have you here today!

In my new novel, Someone Else’s Skye, the first installment in my Men of Brahm Hill series, our hero, Kane, is a very, very bad boy—sexually speaking that is. He loves’em and he leaves’em and then loves someone new, barely having time to dispose of the condom before he’s searching for his next conquest. To be fair, he does appreciate women in that, they’re so beautiful, they’re so intelligent and they smell so good sort of way. But, as an author, how do you make such a wicked character a Hero? I believe it takes three things:

Define a reason for his behavior. Even a love’em and leave’em kind of guy has a reason why he doesn’t want any attachments in his life. When the heroine is able to uncover those reasons and break through any barriers, so to speak, she instantly becomes a woman who is special, rather than like every other woman he’s met.

Change his self-centered focus. Men like Kane, despite their claim to appreciate women, tend to centralize their feelings on themselves. Does she make me feel good? Do I want to see her again? When a heroine intrigues him enough to change his focus to more of: Do I make her feel good? Or, will she see me again? You are effectively changing how he views that woman—as someone very worthy of his focus and attention.

Have that circumstance where the Hero fears losing the Heroine. Whatever the reason . . . traumatic situation, recapturing an old love from the past . . . the Hero has to reach a point where he’s so invested with the Heroine that he can’t allow himself to leave her as he has the women before her. And he can’t lose her. This is the part we women eat up in romance novels. We like to palpably feel when we’re special to our guy.

By using these three strategies, you can effectively about face even the wickedest of page-turning men. And it can be soooo much fun for the reader getting to that point.

I hope you will check out Someone Else’s Skye, and see if you agree that the wickedest men make the most fun Heroes.

SOMEONE ELSE'S SKYE
Men of Brahm Hill, Book 1

Coming October 1, 2013

Kane, Brethren Guardian and one of the few Natural Shape-Shifters left in existence, survived the bloody battle of Brahm Hill but lost two of his closest friends. For all of his good-natured sarcasm and eye-popping good looks, Kane finds himself unable to completely forget about that night, so he seeks comfort in the one thing he is truly good at . . . sex!

This shape-shifting bad boy believes in having a good time—a very good time, usually involving some mingled heavy breathing with a sexy Dhampir in a tiny closet somewhere. But when he’s sent into the freezing tundra of the Northwest Territories to investigate a troublesome supernatural being on the loose, he ends up crossing paths with a woman who almost instantly drives him insane with want . . . because she doesn’t seem to be falling for the shifter’s charms.
It’s completely inexplicable.

Skye Matthews has a job to do, and she needs to be focused on that, not spending all her time rebuffing the advances of this way-too-cocky and handsome stranger. Yet, there is something irresistible about this self-involved playboy that Skye can’t seem to stay away from. And when the unidentified Kane is sent to investigate takes an unnatural interest in her, protecting her becomes the Guardian’s top priority.
